‘Hands on’ PIANO is a meeting dedicated to the piano. It is a unique event due to the symbiosis between two types of meetings: the convention type, of an artistic nature, focusing on a specific musical instrument, and the traditional type of academic research conference, but focusing on a specific instrumental area. ‘Hands on’ PIANO aims to bridge the gap between artistic production and academic research, creating opportunities to combine artists’ and researchers’ knowledge, for mutual benefit. The first ‘hands on’ meeting took place in April 2017 at the University of Aveiro, dedicated to the flute (‘Hands on’ FLUTE). ‘Hands on’ PIANO will take place also at the University of Aveiro, from January 24^th – 27^th, 2018.

Call for proposals

The University of Aveiro and INET-MD (Institute of Ethnomusicology, Centre for Studies in Music and Dance) will host the research meeting ‘Hands on’ PIANO, in Aveiro, Portugal, from the 24^th to the 27^th of January 2018.

This research meeting aims to bring artistic production and academic research closer together, creating opportunities to combine artists’ and researchers’ knowledge, which will have benefits for all. Some of the invited keynotes speakers and performers are: Pedro Burmester (Portugal); Cristina Gerling (Brazil); Hee-Kyung (South Korea); Luís Pipa (Portugal); Lei Cai (China); Piero Rattalino (Italy); Luk Vaes (Belgium); Luís Figueiredo (Portugal); Joana Sá (Portugal); Joana Gama (Portugal); Pedro Pereira (Portugal); Luís Costa (Portugal); Vasco Dantas Rocha (Portugal); Miguel Henriques (Portugal); Carles Lama (Espanha); Vasco Rigolet Neves (Portugal); Sofia Lourenço (Portugal); Fredi Gerling (Brazil); Erato Alakiozidou (Greece); and Helena Marinho (Portugal).

‘Hands on’ PIANO welcomes proposals, particularly those relating to the following subjects:

– Improvisation and music creation with the piano (jazz, classical, rock, pop, etc.);

– Pedagogies for and with the piano;

– Piano performance techniques;

– 21^st century piano repertoire;

– Ibero-American music for the piano;

– Extended techniques for piano;

– Interactions between piano and electronics;

– Psychology and medicine in piano performance;

– Construction and innovation of pianos and digital pianos;

– Piano recordings – history, analysis, recording techniques.

Although submission in English are preferred, the conference organisers will also accept submissions in Portuguese and Spanish (submissions for recitals can also be made in Italian). Proposals that focus on the above aspects are particularly encouraged, although proposals that focus on any research area relating to piano or piano performance will also be considered.

Proposals should be submitted via the platform easychair, formatted according to the nature of the proposal:

Papers (up to 20 minutes): Abstracts must refer to the main focus of the presentation and should not exceed 350 words. A short CV of the presenter/s (up to 100 words) and any technical requirements for presentation must be uploaded to the submission platform. Each presentation room will have a piano available.
Lecture Recitals (up to 45 minutes): Abstracts (up to 350 words) should include information regarding the entire duration of the presentation – the oral presentation and the performance. The submission should also include an audio/video link (e.g. YouTube) of the proposed performance (the file can be uploaded to YouTube as ‘unlisted’, ‘private’ or ‘public’). The link, any technical requirements for presentation, and a short artistic CV of the presenter/s (up to 100 words) must be included in the ‘other documents’ field on the submission platform.
Recitals (up to 30 minutes): Abstracts (up to 350 words) should include information regarding the main goal of the recital and the program. The submission should also include an audio/video link (e.g. YouTube) of the proposed performance (the archive can be uploaded as ‘unlisted’, ‘private’ or ‘public’). The link, any technical requirements for presentation, and a short artistic CV of the presenter/s (up to 100 words) must be included in the ‘other documents’ field on the submission platform.
Presentation of Projects: The organising committee does not stipulate any particular requirement for this submission category – apart from the limit of 350 words for abstracts. However, the inclusion of information regarding context, objectives, methods and results of the specific project is recommended.
Posters: This option includes the presentation of publications, works in progress, research/performance projects (audio, video, image), etc. Abstracts should not exceed 350 words. Any technical requirements for presentation and a short artistic CV of the presenter/s (up to 100 words) must be included in the ‘other documents’ field on the submission platform.
Workshops: Proposals (abstracts, up to 350 words) should include a thorough description of the workshop and state its duration. Any technical requirements for presentation and a short artistic CV of the presenter/s (up to 100 words) must be included in the ‘other documents’ field on the submission platform.
Performance Installations: Abstracts should not exceed 350 words. Any technical requirements and a short artistic CV of the presenter/s (up to 100 words) must be included in the ‘other documents’ field on the submission platform. The installations could be made available during the four days of the meeting.

Important Deadlines

The deadline for proposal submission is December 1st, 2017.

The acceptance of proposals, following a process of evaluation by the scientific and artistic commission, will be communicated no later than December 5th, 2017, with proposals from outside Europe being notified as quickly as possible.

The selected authors will be invited to submit an article or recording to the book of conference proceedings (with audio-visual support). All articles and recordings must be submitted by May 31^st 2018.

Important note

The authors of the works presented during the meeting that stand out the most within the area of Artistic Research will be invited to contribute to a special issue of the journal ÍMPAR – http://revistas.ua.pt/index.php/impar/index.
